Read More BACKGROUND: COVID‑19 (Coronavirus disease‑19) is an ongoing pandemic. COVID vaccineadministration in adults has provided some degree of protection from infection but children are stillsusceptible So, we have to be prepared to handle COVID‑19 infection in children by training ourhealthcare workers by updating both their knowledge and skills. We developed a training module totrain our healthcare workers in all domains of learning and also planned related assessment methodsto know the effectiveness of the module.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a quasi‑experimental study with pre‑ and post‑interventionconducted at a tertiary‑level teaching medical college in southern India from July to September 2021.The training module was developed as per the “ADDIE” model of the development process module.It was further validated by five experts before implementation. In addition to the quasi‑experimentalmethod of evaluation like pre‑ and post‑test, Observed Skill clinical examination (OSCE) had beenalso used as an assessment tool at the completion of training. A total of 92 participants have beentrained as per this module in our tertiary‑level care hospital. The association between continuousand categorical variables was assessed using an independent t‑test and ANOVA, and paired t‑testwas used for comparing the difference between pre‑ and post‑test scores.RESULTS: Pre‑test scores had no association with years of experience (P = 0.803) and previoustraining status of participants (P = 0.350). The mean difference of pre‑ and post‑test scores was 3.8and it was statistically significant (P value < 0.001) A weak positive correlation between pre‑ andpost‑test was present by the Spearmen correlation test (r = 0.337). The correlation between post‑testscore and OSCE score does not have a significant correlation.CONCLUSION: Structured training module was effective in training the participants. Multimodeassessment method (Pre‑test, Post‑test, and OSCE) is an important step to evaluate any trainingprogram as compared to only the pre‑ and post‑test methods of evaluation.

Read More BACKGROUND: Treatment adherence is one of the behaviors associated with type 2 diabetes thatpredicts whether it will be successfully treated or develop complications and become uncontrolled.This study aimed to determine factors affecting nonadherence to treatment among diabetic patientswith limited health literacy from the perspectives of patients, their families, and healthcare providers.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This qualitative study with a content analysis approach was conductedon 84 eligible type 2 diabetes patients with limited health literacy and poor adherence to treatment,as well as their families and healthcare providers using a purposive sampling method, in Kerman cityin 2021. Interviews were conducted using a semistructured interview guide with a broad, open‑endedquestion to provide a general history of the disease separately. The interviewer asked participantsto identify the perceived barriers to treatment nonadherence. Each interview lasted 45–60 min.MAXQDA version 20 and inductive content analysis were used to code and analyze extracted data.RESULTS: Four major themes emerged from the patients’ perspectives as “financial problems,”“individual factors,” “problems related to medication availability,” and “healthcare providers’ poorpractices.” Two major themes were classified from the perspective of patients’ families as “financialproblems” and “Individual factors,” and four major themes were identified from the viewpoint ofhealthcare providers including “financial problems,” “individual factors,” “scarcity and medicationavailability,” and “poor practice of the healthcare provider.” These mentioned barriers were confirmedregarding treatment nonadherence among study participants.CONCLUSION: Study findings revealed different factors of treatment nonadherence among diabeticpatients with limited health literacy. Therefore, these factors should be considered in tailoringpromotive educational and supportive interventions. Considering the importance of adherence totreatment patients, planning empowerment family‑based interventions focusing on health literacyimprovement seems necessary.

Financial literacy and its correlates among healthcare professionals of India: An ignored educational need

Read More BACKGROUND: Financial literacy is a person’s capability to manage their own monetary matters. There was no information available on financial literacy status of healthcare professionals (HCPs) of India. So, the current research was formulated to assess the financial literacy status and its correlates among HCPs of India.MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was an observational study, cross‑sectionally designed, conducted among 524 HCPs of India using a structured Google form during July 2020. For data analysis, SPSS (version 22) was used.RESULTS: Among the study participants, 68.3% were found to be financially literate. Among the various subdomains of the total financial literacy, knowledge regarding general domain was observed to be the best (69.3%) followed by savings (63.7%) and investment (58.0%) domains, respectively. The total financial literacy score was found to be positively correlated with higher age [spearman rho correlation co‑efficient (ρ) = 0.25; P =< 0.01], qualification [(medical postgraduate) (ρ = 0.16;P =< 0.01); (medical super speciality) (ρ = 0.14; P =< 0.01)], and annual family income (ρ = 0.29;P =< 0.01). Moreover, males (ρ = 0.23; P =< 0.01)], currently married (ρ = 0.19; P =< 0.01), and surgeons (ρ = 0.12; P =< 0.01) were found to be more financially literate compared with others. Positive financial attitude (ρ = 0.26; P =< 0.01) and regular maintenance of financial record (ρ = 0.21;P =< 0.01) were the other enabling factors of financial literacy observed in the study.CONCLUSIONS: Financial literacy was found to be quite low in the surveyed HCPs as every third study participant were found to be deficient in knowledge regarding one or more financial attributes. Incorporation of finance management in curriculum of the healthcare allied courses and repeated sensitization of the graduated HCPs are warranted to enable them to take effective financial decisions to meet their personal and organizational financial goals.

An increasing number of cases and deaths are challenging the health‑care system globally.This study aims to assess knowledge, attitude, and practice toward COVID‑19 disease among healthpersonnel in rapid outbreak in India.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross‑sectional survey was conducted using Google Forms throughGoogle platform on-line. A total of 713 health personal allied health‑care staff, working in different publicand private health‑care facilities, was conducted in the mid of April 2020. A structured knowledge, attitude,and practice questionnaire used to assess health personnel’s knowledge, attitude, and practice towardCOVID‑19. All instruments were validated and pretested before use. Chi‑square test, followed by binarylogistic and multivariate regression, was applied to determine factors associated with knowledge scores.RESULTS: Seven hundred and thirteen health personnel participated, and 703 (98.6%) participantsresponded were analyzed for final results. 95.9% of the health personnel were aware about routeof transmission and clinical symptoms (95.3%) of COVID‑19. 63.7% believed that virus outbreakwould be controlled globally and followed standard precautions (81.8%), including wearing the mask.Further, majority (98.3%) of the participants avoided social contact by not going to crowded placesand not calling people to their homes (82.2%) during the advisory of the government. In binarylogistic regression analyses, the adequate knowledge score found significantly associated withMBBS/bachelor’s degree (odds ratio [OR]: 2.309, confidence interval [CI]: 1.232–4.324, P < 0.009)and master’s degree (OR: 2.944, CI: 1.485–5.835, P < 0.002), working with government health‑carefacility (OR: 3.662, CI: 1.624–8.285, P < 0.002), and holding a post of a physician (OR: 7.735, CI:2.210–27.091, P < 0.001) during outbreak.CONCLUSIONS: The level of education is associated with adequate knowledge scores among thehealth personnel. Type of health‑care facility and post held in a health‑care facility are significantpredictors of adequacy of knowledge.
