The current revolution in information technology has given new light tothe importance of knowledge such that it has now become the base of economy in today’s world.In today’s knowledge‑based economy, production and exploitation of knowledge play the mainroles in the process of wealth creation. Considering key contributions of knowledge management incompetitiveness of organizations and their entry into global arenas, this study sought to evaluate theimpact of different aspects of intellectual property on innovations in computer and health informationsystem (HIS) units at selected medical center in the city of Isfahan during 2015.OBJECTIVES: The present study seeks to evaluate the impact of different aspects of intellectualproperty on innovations in computer and HIS units at selected medical centers in the city of Isfahanduring 2015 (2015).SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Population of this research includes staff working in computer and HIS unitsof 10 medical centers. Data were collected using a questionnaire made by the researcher. A writtenquestionnaire (also referred to as self‑administered questionnaire) is a data collection tool in whichwritten questions are presented that are to be answered by study individuals, where for the case ofthe present study include staff members working at computer and HIS units of 10 medical centers.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the first stage, medical factors were determined by experts ofIsfahan University of Medical Sciences as intellectual property. Factors were then distributed randomlyamong 100 employees during a survey, after considering their validity and reliability.STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis.RESULTS: Data analysis showed that innovation is one of the most important indicators of intellectualcapital in computer and HIS units of medical centers and has a higher than average importance.CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study, in addition to providing guidelines in the management ofintellectual capital in Isfahan province hospitals, can be used as a model for improving innovation inhospitals and understanding various factors affecting organizational innovation.

Read More Introduction: Medical errors in hospitals kill more people every year than AIDS, breast cancer andauto accidents combined. Widespread consensus exists that health care organizations can reducepatient injuries by improving the environment for safety from implementing different alternativesfrom technical and managerial improvements to considering medical record data. Consideringthe preventability of medical errors, the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ)developed patient safety indicators (PSIs). This study analyzes the PSIs calculated in AlzahraHospital of Isfahan. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted retrospectively using theinpatient medical record data of hospitalized patients in a six month period, from October 2010to March 2011. An experienced team in the fields of medical record, health management andhealth information technology was involved in data reviewing. Based on a prior consultation andreviewing, some PSIs were selected. Indicators were calculated considering AHRQ guidelines.Excel software and hospital information system software were used. Results: Across all studiedmedical records of patients, out of 25,164 discharges, below measures were calculated.‑8 Foreign Body cases (PSI 5) (0.31 per 1000).‑30 Postoperative Hemorrhage or Hematoma cases (PS I9) (2.2 per 1000).‑5 Accidental Puncture or Laceration cases (PSI 15) (0.3 per1000).‑8 Complications of Anesthesia cases (PSI 1) (2.2 per 1000).‑96 Selected Infections Due to Medical Care cases (PSI 7) (3.8 per1000).‑17 cases of Postoperative Wound Dehiscence (PSI 14) (3.7per1000).‑1 Birth Trauma – Injury to Neonate case, and (PSI 17) (1.7 per 1000).‑18 Obstetric Trauma – Cesarean Delivery cases (PSI 20) (40 per 1000) were flagged bystudied PSIs developed by AHRQ.Conclusion: Comparing with the reported rates by other studies and AHRQ study in 2006, allof calculated indicators have inadequate condition; i.e. these are far from empirical estimatedrates. The hospital administrators should be more sensitive to this issue and perform someimprovement programs.

Read More Background: Violence is now regarded as a serious problem and its complication causes heavycosts on the healthcare systems. The present study aimed to investigate the correlation betweensome demographic characteristics and confrontation with violence. Since there is no study onthe prevalence of violence among the support and administration staff of hospitals in Iran, thisstudy was conducted to investigate violence in these departments. Materials and Methods: Thisdescriptive–analytical and correlation survey was carried out by census among the support andadministrative staff interacting with patients and their companions in Al‑Zahra University Hospitalof Isfahan in 2013. Research tool was a researcher‑made questionnaire including five domains:Personal information, workplace information, verbal violence, physical violence, and other violentacts. Its validity was evaluated by experts reviewing it and its reliability by test–retest (r = 0.9).Finally, data were analyzed using descriptive statistical indicators and statistical tests such asChi‑square for sex, marital status, and work department and Mann–Whitney U test for age, levelof education, work experience, and violence types by the statistical software SPSS version 20.Results: According to the results obtained, 81% of subjects had been abused at least onceand the most reported violence was related to verbal violence (78.4%). There was significantcorrelation between sex and violence and men were the main victims of violence, but there wasno relation between marital status, age, and violence. Work experience was correlated to physicalviolence and other violent acts conversely. There was also an inverse correlation between physicalviolence and education; also, security staff faced more violence than others. Conclusion: Ashigh prevalence of violence was found especially among the security staff and personnel withless education and work experience, it is suggested to take actions such as educating aboutpatient accompaniment and visiting condition, holding training workshops on confronting withviolence and appropriate communication with patients and families, using experienced andpatient staff to interact with clients.

Read More Background: Considering globalization of health care and quality improvement trend torespond to competition and customer orientation, attention to organizational structureand its relationship with market orientation is essential. Therefore, this study reviews therelationship between organizational structure and market orientation in selected hospitalsof Isfahan (Iran). Materials and Methods: This study was a descriptive survey. The studypopulation comprised nurse managers from selected hospitals (n = 80). Data collection toolswere two questionnaires (market orientation questionnaire and organizational structure) thatthe validity and reliability were confirmed (r = 0.83 for market orientation questionnaire andr = 0.87 for organizational structure). SPSS (Ver. 16) software was used for the analyses.Results: The mean score of organizational structure was 65.4 (11.2) and total mean ofmarket orientation was 51.14 (17.6). All aspects of the organizational structure (OrganizationCentralization, Formalization in Organization, and Organization Complication) and marketorientation (responding to competition, accountability, customer satisfaction, intelligentorganization)—except by responding to clients with Formalization in Organization—as well asall aspects of the Systemic attitude (the system of internal coordination and communicationsystems_ and market orientation (responding to competition, accountability, customersatisfaction, intelligent organization), there was a meaningful relationship (P < 0.05).Conclusion: Market orientation and its dimensions have a significant relationship withorganizational structure and can lead managers’ view to the analysis and recognizing elementsof success and achievement to goals. With increasing competition in markets, globalizationof health services, and presence in international markets and more attention to patients’satisfaction, hospitals need to understand and use of market orientation in order to promotequality and services in the health care system.
