Read More BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are among the most important causes of premature death, disability, disease burden, and increasing the cost of healthcare worldwide. Having an overview of service utilization can help policymakers to plan more effective use of those services and to cut costs. Thus, this study aims to determine the amount of use as well as the cost of various outpatient diagnostic procedures for CVDs in Isfahan province of Iran from 2011 to 2017.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive study used insurance claim data (time period: 2011–2017) from Health Insurance Organization in Isfahan province to determine the amount of use and the cost of various outpatient diagnostic procedures for CVDs. Afterward, based on these data, the use and the cost of various outpatient diagnostic procedures for CVDs were estimated for the total population of Isfahan province. The list of outpatient diagnostic procedures for CVDs was carefully chosen according to experts’ opinions.RESULTS: The use and the cost of outpatient diagnostic procedures for CVDs have drastically increased in the study period (2011–2017). Since 2011, the number of procedures and their related costs have increased 6.6 and 30.76 times (11.74 times, adjusted with PPP conversion factor), respectively. Per capita use (per thousand people) was 18.75 in 2011, reaching 116.51 in 2017. Per capita cost (per thousand people) was 1,887,660 IRR (355 PPP$) in 2011, reaching 54,660,365 IRR (3920 PPP$) in 2017. The highest cost and use were related to echocardiography and electrocardiography, respectively. A notable increase has been observed in the share of radionuclide myocardial perfusion scan and analysis of pacemakers and ICDs of the total cost.CONCLUSIONS: The use of outpatient diagnostic procedures for CVDs has drastically increased during the studied period. Consequently, the cost borne by the health system and the patients have notably increased. This may be because of the increase in the incidence and prevalence of CVDs during the study period. Greater access to related health services can be mentioned as another reason for this increase. Further research is needed to explain all potential reasons and their importance, which can provoke a suitable health policy reaction.

Read More BACKGROUND: An unhealthy lifestyle can threaten the health of nursing staff, especially in thecontext of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Considering the importance of health education inpromoting preventive behaviors against these diseases, this study aimed to evaluate the effect ofan educational program based on the health belief model (HBM) on improving preventive behaviorsof nurses against CVDs.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a randomized controlled trial with a pretest–posttest designconducted on 104 nursing staff of Imam Khomeini Hospital in Kuhdasht, Lorestan, Iran, in 2017.They were randomly assigned into two groups of HBM (n = 52) and control (n = 52). The HBM groupreceived the educational intervention for 6 weeks, one session per week each for 30–40 min. Theywere measured before and after the intervention using a demographic form, a researcher‑made HBMquestionnaire, Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire, and the 3‑day food intake record all inPersian. The collected data were analyzed in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS)v. 24 software using the Chi‑squared test and paired t‑test.RESULTS: The educational program could only increase the perceived severity (22.64 ± 2.22),perceived benefits (50.83 ± 5.22), and perceived self‑efficacy (42.37 ± 5.93) of nurses in the HBMgroup compared to the controls (P < 0.05). The nurses’ perceived sensitivity was also increased,but it was not significant (P > 0.05). In the HBM group, a significant change was found in thefood intake level for energy (t = 4.79, P = 0.000), protein (t = −2.99, P = 0.004), and unsaturatedfat (t = −2.94, P = 0.005) after intervention. No significant difference was observed in the total physicalactivity score after the intervention (P > 0.05).CONCLUSION: An educational program based on the HBM model can be used to increase theseverity, benefits, and self‑efficacy of the nurses’ preventive behaviors against CVDs and modifytheir dietary regime.

Read More INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease is one of the most important causes of mortality in theworld; identifying and correcting the modifiable risk factors reduce the prevalence of coronary arterydisorders. Nurses, with regard to their employment conditions, can be prone to cardiovasculardisease. The aim of this study was to compare the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases in maleand female nurses.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this descriptive cross‑sectional study, 263 nurses from JahromUniversity of Medical Sciences hospitals were enrolled in the study by convenience sampling. Thedata collection tool was self‑report Framingham Risk Score and has two parts: first part: personal data,history of disease, history, cigarette, stress and fat disorder, alcohol consumption, diet, exercise, andaverage hours and second part: height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist‑to‑stature ratio (WSR),waist‑to‑hip ratio (WHR), blood pressure, triglyceride (TG), cholesterol, and fasting blood sugar. Thebenchmark for blood pressure was the JNC‑7 guide. The Adult Treatment Panel III was the guideline.Independent t‑test, Chi‑square, and Mann–Whitney tests were used for data analysis.RESULTS: None of the staff reported smoking or alcohol history. Data were analyzed using descriptiveand inferential statistics. There was no statistically significant difference between the mean of fastingblood glucose, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, TG and cholesterol, Framingham percentage,religious practices, green tea and black tea, fish, vegetables, and fast food. The data were analyzedwith independent t‑test, Chi‑square, and Mann–Whitney tests. There was no statistically significantdifference between the mean of fasting blood glucose, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, TG andcholesterol, Framingham Percentage, religious practices, green tea and black tea, fish, vegetables,and fast food and sports and walking of men and women were not observed. However, there wasa statistically significant difference between women and men in indicators such as eating breakfast,family history, fruit consumption, high‑density lipoprotein, BMI, WSR, and WHR.CONCLUSION: The results of the study showed that men are at higher risk for cardiovasculardiseases and complications than women.
