Read More BACKGROUND: Patient safety culture is an integral part of patient care standards and a prerequisitefor safe care. SBAR is an acronym for Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation; thiscommunication model has gained popularity in health‑care settings, especially among professionssuch as nursing. However, there is little evidence that nursing professional education can enhancepatient safety culture. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a SBAR‑based trainingprogram on patient safety culture in intensive care unit (ICU) nurses.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The quasi‑experimental study was carried out in 2018–2019 at areascovered by Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences, Iran. This study was performed on 60 nursesworking in ICU. The participants were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups of30 each. For the experimental group, five workshop sessions of SBAR‑based program were held.For the control group, the patient delivery process was performed according to the ward routine. Datawere collected using patient safety culture questionnaires before and 1 month after the intervention,and were analyzed using descriptive and analytical tests such as paired t‑test, independent t‑test,and Chi‑square test by SPSS 22.RESULTS: The mean score of safety culture was 31 ± 23.5 and 55.2 ± 28.6 in frequency of reportingevents, 32.8 ± 17.8 and 54.3 ± 19 in overall perception of patient safety, 23 ± 20.1 and 52.9 ± 26 incommunication channel openness, and 35.2 ± 19.8 and 52.4 ± 18.8 in information exchange andconveyance before and after training intervention, respectively, so that they improved from poorlevel to neutral‑moderate level. There was no strength in any dimensions of safety culture; however,the implementation of the SBAR‑based program was significantly associated with patient safetyculture (P < 0.001).CONCLUSIONS: Improving patient safety culture requires attention to patient safety models suchas SBAR approach that provides an appropriate and reliable structure for quality improvement.SBAR‑based program training is effective in promoting patient safety culture; therefore, it isrecommended that managers use this technique to promote patient safety culture.

Read More BACKGROUND: The safety of hospitalized patients in the intensive care units (ICUs) is threateneddue to incidents and adverse events, including medication errors. Medication error refers to anypreventable event at different stage of medication process, such as prescription, transcription,distributing medication, and administration, which can lead to incorrect use of medicines or damageto the patient. This study aimed at investigating the effect of the interprofessional education ofmedication safety program on medication errors of physicians and nurses in the ICUs.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted using a quasi‑experimental method (singlegroup, before and after) in 2017. The setting of the study included one ICU of selected teaching hospitalaffiliated to Isfahan University of Medical Sciences located in the Central Iran with a total of 23 beds.Participants included 50 members of the health‑care team (physician, nurse, and clinical pharmacist)with at least 1 year of work experience in the ICUs. Participants were selected using censusessampling method. Data were collected using a two‑section self‑made questionnaire. Data wereanalyzed through descriptive, analytical statistics, and version 16 of the SPSS software (P < 0.05).RESULTS: According to reporting of physicians, nurses, and clinical pharmacist, the medicationerror 1 month after implementation, the interprofessional education of medication safety programwas significantly lower than before the implementation of it (P < 0.001).CONCLUSIONS: Interprofessional education helps to improve interprofessional collaboration andpatient care through the promotion of various professions of health to increase interprofessionalcollaboration compared to single profession education, which individuals learn in isolation and merelyin their profession. Therefore, interprofessional education of medication safety program can reducemedication error and promote patient safety in the ICUs.
