Read More BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate how medical students perceive their educationalenvironment, as well as the implications of motivation, learning strategies, and the factor of emotionalintelligence on academic achievement.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cross‑sectional study, 3384 undergraduate students wererecruited from randomly selected Egyptian medical colleges. Students from second to final year, takingfundamental and clinical courses and, at a minimum, three professional exams, were enrolled andsubjected to the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure scale, the Motivated Strategiesfor Learning Questionnaire, and Emotional intelligence questionnaire.RESULTS: The overall mean age of the studied students was 21.42 ± 1.61 years. Femalesrepresented 63.5%, rural residents were 52.2% and students with enough income represented 88.0%.The traditional system adopted 28.4% of the students versus 71.6% in the integrated system. Linearregression using path analysis was conducted to study the predictors of academic achievement, andit revealed that motivation was the highly significant predictor of academic achievement (β = 2.68,CI95%:2.35–3.05, P < 0.001), followed by learning (β = 1.09, CI95%:0.80–1.41, P < 0.001), emotionalintelligence (β = 0.92, CI95%:0.87–0.97, P < 0.001), and the educational environment (β = 0.14,CI95%:0.13–0.15, P < 0.001).CONCLUSION: The study’s findings have implications for medical educators trying to understand thepersonal factors that influence learning and performance in medical school. Students’ motivation wasthe highly significant predictor of academic achievement followed by learning, emotional intelligence,and educational environment. Perception of the learning environment had improved because ofthe integrated student‑centered system, which fosters motivation and emotional intelligence. Toimprove learners’ EI, optimal learning, and educational outcomes, the EI components can be taughtand fostered.

Read More INTRODUCTION: Considering the importance of the academic level of university graduates in theadvancement of communities, it is necessary to evaluate factors affecting the academic achievementsof university students. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between religious beliefs andacademic achievements of students in the Dental School in Qazvin University of Medical Sciences.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this correlational study, all the dentistry students in the last 4 yearsof education were selected as the study samples. Of 109 students who had the inclusion criteria,81 (31 males and 50 females) completed the questionnaires. The data collection tools were threequestionnaires, including Gluck–Stark’s questionnaire, two researcher‑made questionnaires on“sympathy with and responsibility for patients,” and the “self‑satisfaction” questionnaire. Data wereanalyzed with descriptive and deductive statistics (t‑test, Friedman test, and Pearson’s correlationcoefficient).RESULTS: According to the analyses, a significant and positive correlation was found betweenreligiosity and students’ overall mean grades (r = 0.27, P = 0.016) or “sympathy with and responsibilityfor patients” (r = 0.21, P = 0.05). No significant correlation was found between self‑satisfaction andreligious beliefs.CONCLUSION: Based on the results of the present study, the religious beliefs of the studentswere at a moderate level. On the other hand, this variable had a direct relationship with academicachievement and responsibility. Therefore, attention has to be paid to the promotion of these beliefsamong students in colleges. Reinforcement of religious beliefs will improve the students’ academicachievement. Based on the findings of this study, it should be considered by university professorsand educational planners that the average score of students with higher religiosity was higher, andwith the increase of religious beliefs, academic achievement is increased.

Read More BACKGROUND: Today’s Bachelor in Medicine, Bachelor in Surgery (MBBS) students will becomeIndian Medical Graduates in future. Emotional intelligence (EI) is an essential component in themaking of an Indian Medical Graduate. There is increasing stress during medical training. The studywas conducted to compare the association of EI score and perceived stress scale (PSS) amongaverage and excellent undergraduate medical students. The secondary objective was to find thepredictors of excellent academic performance.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive cross‑sectional study was conducted after institutionalethics committee approval. All 522 consented students studying in 2nd, 4th, 7th, and 9th semesters filledup established pre‑validated questionnaires ; Schutteself report EI test and Cohen’s perceived stressscale. Sociodemographic details of the respondents were collected. Average attendance and marksof previous semester examinations of all included students were collected from academic cell of theinstitution. All students were grouped into three groups: average, good, and excellent performersfrom the marks collected. Comparison of EI scores and PSS scores was done between students inexcellent and average groups using unpaired t‑test.RESULTS: Of the 94.9% of respondents, 78.2% of the students were included in the study. The meanEI and PSS scores were 123 ± 14.5 and 22.8 ± 13.9, respectively. There was no statistically significantdifference in EI scores between average and excellent performers ([123.8 ± 18.7] vs. [127.7 ± 16];P – 0.089). Perceived stress was lower in excellent performers ([20.9 ± 11.1] vs. [24.8 ± 15.0];P – 0.01). EI was associated with better performance in clinical year students. EI was negativelycorrelated to perceived stress.CONCLUSION. Our study provides predictors of excellent academic performances among Indianmedical undergraduates. This study suggests introduction of extracurricular activities in ongoingundergraduate curricular syllabus. It imparts awareness among students about the importance ofattending classes. This study bestows higher EI and lower perceived stress to better academicperformance.
