Read More BACKGROUND: The lack of fundamental knowledge and awareness about the biological process ofreproduction is low worldwide but has reportedly higher incidence rates in under‑developed countries.Infertility can have a tremendous effect on a woman’s psychological and social well‑being, pushingher toward mental stress, anxiety, depression self‑blame, self‑isolation, feeling of worthlessness,and lack of interest in life. The present study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge andawareness regarding factors affecting fertility and also to ascertain the emotional status of femalesvisiting the Obstetrics and Gynecology out‑patient department for fertility assistance.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross‑sectional study was performed by using a questionnairewhich had two parts; the first part had questions about awareness and knowledge of the subjectof infertility, and the second part had 12 questions that assessed the psychological and emotionalstatus of the participants, and it also explored prevailing myths about infertility based on a validatedquestionnaire.RESULTS: There was a significant difference in mean knowledge score; those who were moreeducated had better knowledge of various aspects of infertility. The overall adequacy for knowledgeand awareness revealed that only 62 (47.7%) of the participants had adequate knowledge (score >6)regarding female infertility. The mean score for knowledge among all the respondents was 6.61 ± 1.48.The overall emotional and psychological score suggested that 30 (23%) of the respondents weredisturbed because of stress because of infertility.CONCLUSION: Infertility can have a serious impact on the psychological well‑being of females,and social pressure and stigma associated with childlessness can further worsen the physical andemotional well‑being of couples, which needs to be addressed before starting treatment of infertilityfor a better response to treatment. The limited knowledge and prevailing mis‑conceptions regardinginfertility need to be sincerely dealt with to complement the medical treatment of infertility.

Read More BACKGROUND: Infertility is a crisis in the life of couples that could affect their relationships. Thepresent study was conducted to evaluate the relation between infertility factors and the quality ofmarital relationship in infertile couples who were referred to the Fertility and Infertility Center of Isfahan.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was conducted cross‑sectional on 131 infertilecouples who were referred to the Fertility and Infertility Center of Isfahan and had the inclusion criteriaand were selected using convenient sampling method. Data gathering tool for the present study wasPerceived Relationship Quality Components (PRQC). All the data were analyzed using SPSS softwareversion 21. Analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics (independent t‑test andone‑way analysis of variance). The level of significance was set at 0.05 for all the statistical tests.RESULTS: The mean score of PRQC for women and men was 84.05 and 88.46, respectively, andtheir difference was statistically significant. There was a significant relation between the score ofPRQC in women (P = 0.028) and men (P = 0.030) with the infertility factor. Results showed that themean score of perceived quality of different aspects of the marital relationship was significantly lowerwhen the infertility factor was female (P < 0.05). In women aspects of “satisfaction” (P = 0.024) and“commitment” (P = 0.011) and in men aspect of “love” (P = 0.004) from the perceived aspects ofrelationship had a significant relation with the infertility factor.CONCLUSIONS: Perceived quality of different aspects of marital relationship had a significant relationwith infertility factor in infertile couples. Results of the present study showed that when infertility hadfemale causes, the quality of relationship was more affected. Therefore, in infertility counseling,simultaneous counseling for both spouses with emphasis on women, along with treatments, shouldbe considered.

Read More While battling the life‑threatening complications of COVID‑19, its effect on the menstrualcycle and infertility has been somewhat ignored. This brief review aims on highlighting theimportance of menstrual abnormalities being experienced during the post‑COVID periodand to make the clinicians aware about what to expect in regard of menstrual abnormalitiesby learning from various studies that have been conducted worldwide. This review articlewas written with systematic literature review with the help of data search machine suchas PubMed, Scopus, Web of Sciences, and Google Scholar.A search strategy leads to theextraction of 160 related articles that after the removal of inappropriate and duplicatearticles, 33 articles were selected for the review. To find other potentially relevant articles,the references of the extracted articles were thoroughly examined. The search was carriedout using keywords including “COVID‑19,” “Menstrual abnormalities,” and “Infertility.”Using OR and AND, the keywords mentioned above were combined and then utilized inthe search box of the databases. Articles published from January 2020 to September 2021were included in this study. It includes worldwide data ranging from studies done in China,India, Ireland, Turkey, Jordan, and Germany. During the post‑COVID period, there is asignificant alteration in the sex hormones of females infected by COVID‑19 which maymanifest as menstrual cycle abnormalities such as decreased cycle length or prolongedmenstrual cycle bleeding. It may also manifest as infertility due to ovarian failure dueto suppression of ovarian function COVID‑19 a novel coronavirus which is presently apandemic has affected the world in manner reminding the world of 1918 Spanish flu.However, while battling the deadly pandemic, the clinicians should also be aware of therepercussions of the effect this infection has on multiple organs such as ovarian suppressionleading to infertility, oligomenorrhea, or menorrhagia.

Read More BACKGROUND: Fertility is always one of the most important functions of the family. Having achild equals growing up and entering the adult world. Adoption is one of the methods that can beconsidered to treat infertility. One of the duties of health professionals, especially midwives, is toadvise and educate infertile people, which helps them in a way beyond medical treatment. Therefore,this study was conducted to determine the effect of face‑to‑face and telephone counseling on thedesire for adoption in infertile couples.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was a two‑group counseling intervention study that wasperformed on 34 infertile couples referred to Mashhad Infertility Center. Infertile couples were randomlyassigned to face‑to‑face and telephone counseling groups. All participants completed the AdoptionAdoption Questionnaire at the beginning and end of the study. Data were analyzed by spss16 software.RESULTS: The mean score of propensity to adopt in the face‑to‑face counseling group 2 weeks afterthe intervention was significantly higher than before the intervention. Furthermore, the mean scoreof desire for adoption in the telephone counseling group increased significantly 2 weeks after theintervention compared to before (P < 0.001). Adoption scores varied in the face‑to‑face counseling groupat 3.15 and in the telephone counseling group at 3.23. There was no statistically significant differencebetween the two groups (P < 0.885). The most common reason for not wanting to adopt was hopefor self‑treatment and having children (70.6% women and 67.6% men). The most common reason foraccepting an adopted child was the strong need to have a child (23.5% in women and 23.5% in men).CONCLUSION: According to the results of this study, counseling can increase people’s awarenessof the conditions of adoption and thus increase the desire of people to accept the adopted child. Forthis reason, considering adoption counseling sessions for infertile couples who have been receivinginfertility treatment for a long time but have not become pregnant can help the couple decide.
