Read More BACKGROUND: Learners have various processing and understanding of the environment and issuesand choose different strategies for problem‑solving considering learning and studying approaches.The purpose of this study was to examine medical students’ learning approaches and their associationwith academic performance and problem‑solving styles.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted using the descriptive‑correlational method.The statistical population comprised medical students of Iran University of Medical Sciences duringthe academic year of 2019–2020. Of them, 168 subjects were chosen based on simple randomsampling and Morgan Table. Study tools include the Standard Approaches and Study Skills Inventoryfor Students (ASSIST) Questionnaire, which includes 18 items and a Likert five‑choice spectrum,and includes a deep, superficial, and strategic approach. Its reliability was determined by Cronbach’salpha of 0.81. Problem‑Solving Style Questionnaire developed by Cassidy and Long was used. Thisinstrument included 24 items and 6 components, and its reliability equaled 0.83, which was theirgrade point average. Data were analyzed using normality tests, paired t‑test, Pearson correlationcoefficient, and regression through SPSS 16 software.RESULTS: Results implied the positive and significant relationship between deep‑strategic approaches,problem‑solving styles, and academic performance of medical students (P < 0.001); furthermore,there was no significant difference between learning approaches based on gender (P > 0.001), whilethere was a significant difference between two groups in terms of problem‑solving styles (P < 0.001).CONCLUSION: Because deep and strategic approaches predict academic performance andproblem‑solving styles, the diagnostic assessment must be done at the beginning of the educationalprocess to determine the type of learners’ approaches. Such an evaluation can be used to implementinstructional strategies and educational designs to improve the academic performance of students.

Read More BACKGROUND: Students’ perception of their academic environment has a substantial influenceon their actions, academic accomplishments, satisfaction, goal attainment, and behavior. The studywas carried out to evaluate the perception of academic environment in physiotherapy students, andto identify the specific domains which could act as predictors of academic performance.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional research was conductedover 12 months using total population sampling. Three hundred and forty-three (139 postgraduateand 204 final year) final year and postgraduate physiotherapy students from five colleges ofMumbai and Navi Mumbai, who conformed to the inclusion benchmarks, participated in the study.Perception of educational environment was evaluated using Dundee Ready Education EnvironmentMeasure (DREEM). Academic performance was evaluated using the percentage obtained in thelast university examination. Data were entered in MS Excel (©Microsoft, USA) and converted toStata Version 15.1© StataCorp, College Station, for further analysis. The mean values and standarddeviations for perception of educational environment were calculated and linear regression modelswere used to conduct multivariate analysis for each item in the questionnaire.RESULTS: The mean total DREEM score of physiotherapy students was 129.97 ± 22.72. Studentswhose Students’ Academic Self‑perception scores were in the “Feeling more on the positive side”category showed a 4.17 point increase in percentage scores as compared with those who reportedfeeling like a total failure/had many negative aspects to their academic self‑perception (95% confidenceinterval [CI]: 2.46, 5.89; P < 0.001). Students whose Students’ Perception of Learning (SPoL) scoreswere in the “Teaching highly thought of” category showed a 2.75 point increase in percentage scoresas compared with those who viewed teaching poorly/negatively (95% CI: 0.44, 5.06; P = 0.02).CONCLUSION: Physiotherapy students had a “more positive than negative” view of the academicenvironment; however, a few “problematic areas” need to be remediated. Efforts to improve students’academic self-perception may improve their academic performance since this was the strongestpredictor of their academic performance, followed by total DREEM scores and SPoL.

Read More BACKGROUND: Social media has become a most inseparable part of young adults’ lives with the rapid development of information and communication technology. The study aimed to assess the use of social media and its association with academic performance, well‑being, and interpersonal relation of the health sciences undergraduates.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross‑sectional study was conducted among undergraduates in Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (n = 220), University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka. Data were collected using a pretested, self‑administered questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.RESULTS: The response rate was 79.5%. All undergraduates (n = 175) had social media accounts, and WhatsApp was the most frequently used social media site (96.0%), followed by Facebook (70.9%), mainly for communicating (85.1%), entertainment (83.4%), and online learning (65.7%). Most undergraduates (72.0%) spent 2–5 h daily on social media sites and followed social media 1–10 times per day (54.9%). The majority of them wished to use social media for academic purposes (94.9%), and the most preferred site for academic work was WhatsApp (65.1%). Most undergraduates’ self‑reported Grade Point Average (GPA) (46.3%) was <2.9. There was a statistically significant associationbetween the mean GPA and frequencies of using social media (P = 0.02) (not daily [3.3 ± 0.3], 1–10 times a day [2.9 ± 0.4], and more than 10 times a day [3 ± 0.4]). Perceived social media addiction and duration of sleep (P = 0.02), activities of daily living (P = 0.004), and study time (P = 0.02) were found to be significantly associated.CONCLUSIONS: Despite the undergraduates’ willingness to use social media for academic purposes, the frequency of using social media had a significant influence on their academic performance. Thishighlights the importance of guidance on effective use of social media and social media addiction to improve undergraduates’ academic performance, well‑being, and interpersonal relationships.

Likewise, reflection has beenrecognized as an indispensable and formidable concept for learning which plays a positive role infostering students’ self‑reflection, critical thinking, and development of professional values and skill.Hence, the present study was undertaken to identify the effect of reflective thinking on academicperformance among undergraduate dental students.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reflective thinking was assessed among 2nd‑, 3rd‑, and 4th‑yearundergraduate dental students and interns of a dental college and hospital in Hyderabad. Reflectionquestionnaire assessed habitual action, understanding, reflection, and critical reflection on a 5‑pointLikert scale. The percentage of marks obtained in the last university examinations was considered foracademic performance. The completed questionnaires were analyzed using the Statistical Packagefor the Social Sciences software (SPSS version 20). P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.RESULTS: A total sample of 263 individuals comprising 188 (71.5%) females and 75 (28.5%) malesparticipated in the study. Our findings showed that the four scales of reflective thinking, such as habitualaction (P = 0.0001*), understanding (P = 0.02*), reflection (P = 0.02*), and critical reflection (P = 0.01*),showed statistically significant difference based on the year of study. However, no difference basedon gender was noted. Reflection (17.2 ± 2.41) and critical reflection (16.3 ± 2.77) mean scores werehighest among 4th years. Higher understanding (17.83 ± 1.78) and reflection (17.33 ± 2.01) meanscores were observed among students who attained more than 75% in their academic performance.CONCLUSION: Thus, the present study emphasizes the role of reflective thinking and its significancein academic learning process.

To become lifelong learners, they do need these skills.Information literacy is a set of information needed for searching, retrieval, evaluating, andmaking best use of information. This study uncovers the relationship between informationliteracy and academic performance among students at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences.Materials and Methods: This is a practical study using a survey method. All MA studentsin Isfahan University of Medical Sciences make the statistical population for this study,according to the sample size determined by using Cochran formula 265 samples that wereselected by stratified random sampling. Data collection was through information literacyquestionnaires designed by Davarpanah and Siamak, verified by Library and InformationSciences experts; and finally, gave a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.83. To determine academicperformance, the average scores of the students in previous semesters were considered.Results: The information literacy of all other students was significantly higher than mediumexcept for students at Nursing and Nutrition faculties. The students of Management andInformation Sciences faculty had the highest level of information literacy and students ofnutrition faculty were attributed with the least level. There was no significant differencebetween male and female students’ information literacy. We also found out that there wasa significant positive relationship between information literacy and students’ academicperformance in Isfahan University of Medical Sciences.Conclusion: Information literacy isone of the most important factors that leads to educational success. As there is a significantpositive relationship between information literacy and students’ academic performance,we should necessarily provide them with relative skills dealing with information literacy toimprove their academic performance.
