Read More During the COVID‑19 pandemic, people are using social media more than usual routine because theyrely on online sources to seek health information for themselves and their loved ones. The spread ofinaccurate and misleading information via social media has a number of detrimental psychologicaleffects on members of society. The aim of this systematic review was to describe the impact of socialmedia on the mental health of the general population. An extensive systematic search was done till thelast month of 2021 for collecting the evidence using the PRISMA technique. The search was mainlyfocused on the article leading with keywords and search engines used during the course of the studywere Pubmed, Semantic Scholar, Mendeley, and Science direct. Articles for this study were selectedbased on the predetermined eligibility criteria and performed quality assessment by using the NHLBIquality assessment tool. Most of the studies included in this review are found fair (score between9 and 12) quality. Out of 866 publications, 533 articles were included in the initial screening, afterduplication removal 46 full‑text articles were assessed for eligibility and 14 studies were selected forsystematic review. In most of the studies, maximum participants used social media as a primary sourceof information. Relatively high rates of symptoms of depression (14.14% to 48.3%), anxiety (7.4% to47.82%), and prevalence of stress increased to 37.67% are reported after exposure to social mediafor coverage of COVID‑19 news in the general population. Risk factors of psychological distress areassociated with female gender, younger age group, marital status, staying alone, and duration ofexposure to mass media. Increased exposure to COVID‑19 information through mass/social mediais associated with highly significant levels of psychological health issues; mitigating the hazardouseffect of social media exposure during the COVID‑19 pandemic on the psychological health of thegeneral population is an international public health priority.

Read More BACKGROUND: Linking anatomy with the clinical approach for creating an inquisitive mind fora millennium via the digital platform is the need of the hour. Traditional lecturing makes studentshave rote memorization of the human anatomy. The inquiry‑based project will allow undergraduatemedical students to have a deeper understanding of human anatomy along with team building andinterpersonal skill development. This approach of teaching would allow students to link the contenttaught for human anatomy with its clinical applicability and probably generate inquisitiveness forfurther exploring the course content. The study aimed to appraise and assess the perception ofmedical students and faculty about the inquiry‑based digitalized project presentation.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross‑sectional study was conducted for inquiry‑basedproject presentation where students were divided into 15 groups with 15 inquiries, which werepresented as projects on a digital platform under the guidance of the facilitator. The perceptionof students and faculty for the inquiry‑based approach was collected using a validated surveyquestionnaire. The quantitative data were analyzed by SPSS‑version 15, using descriptive statistics,Friedman’s rank, and thematic analysis for qualitative data.RESULT: In total, 117 students participated in the pre‑test and 129 in the post‑test part of the study.Also, 79.1% of students appreciated that the inquiry‑based project presentation approach allowedthem to link anatomy with different courses; 73.6% agreed that this approach has a positive impacton their attitude toward learning anatomy. Then, 75.2% students appreciated of learning new skillsusing the digital platform. They agreed to have developed leadership (65.1%) and team‑buildingskills (83.7%) and self‑directed learning (SDL) improvement (71.3%). However, some students (9.3%)and faculty (16.7%) had been ostracized for presenting their inquiry‑based projects on a digitalplatform, whereas 65.1% of students appreciated this approach.CONCLUSION: Inquiry‑based learning approach would allow students to have a deeperunderstanding of the subject knowledge and skills for the SDL and learn strategies for the usage ofvirtual technology for literature search.

Read More BACKGROUND: The corona virus disease (COVID‑19) pandemic has caused widespread effect onthe lives of health care professionals. The postgraduate medical students, who are the major pillarsof medical institutions had to bear multitude of setbacks due to the pandemic involving academic,research and well‑being issues.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross sectional feedback based online survey done in themonth of October 2021 to study the effect of COVID‑19 pandemic induced changes in the postgraduatemedical education; amongst 78 students pursuing MD/MS degree in all departments of a tertiary medicalinstitute in Himalayan foothills of North India. The questionnaire consisted of ten questions; each of whichneeded to be answered on a five point Likert scale ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Resultswere assessed for the most common answers of each question (represented by mode) and associationbetween various components of the questionnaire analyzed by Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient.RESULTS: The internal consistency of the questionnaire as tested by Cronbach’s Alpha (0.82) wasgood. Most number or respondents were from surgical branches (n = 31, 39.74%). There was ageneralized agreement towards preference of resumption of onsite education (75.64%), the lack ofvariety of cases causing hampering of thesis work (88.46%) and increased mental stress during thepandemic (58.9%). While more time for self‑study was seen as the only consensual positive aspectof online teaching (64%), most students opined that technical glitches are a major roadblock inonline education (80.76%). Significant positive correlation was seen between disciplinary ease andpunctuality in online teaching (R = 0.543, P < 0.001), lack of interaction and its effect on learning andmental health (R = 0.471; P < 0.001) and the lack of diversity in cases and difficulties in dissertationwork (R = 0.351; P < 0.05). Negative correlation was observed between the satisfaction from overalllearning through online teaching and the desire of resumption of offline classes (R = −0.491; P < 0.001).CONCLUSION: COVID‑19 pandemic and its effects on medical education are long lasting.A comprehensive approach is required to rebuild the medical education curriculum, inculcating bothtraditional and newer virtual methods of education. A consistent support in academics and overallgrowth needs to be provided to medical postgraduate residents who have been the first line fightersin face of the massive disaster compromising their basic needs and education.

Read More BACKGROUND: In the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic era, clinical programs and mandatory hands‑on activities have been supplanted by remote teaching to maintain the fundamental capabilities of medical training and to furnish medical students with quality education. Nonetheless, the satisfaction of faculty members with this training method in the current pandemic has yet to be assessed. The aim of this study was to design a Persian questionnaire with appropriate validity and reliability on cardiology professors’ satisfaction level with virtual education.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross‑sectional study, a questionnaire was devised drawing upon scientific sources and Iranian medical educators’ expertise. Seventeen faculty members in various specialties evaluated the questionnaire concerning face and content validity. Content validity was assessed through the calculation of the content validity ratio (CVR) (values >0.62 were considered acceptable) and the content validity index (CVI) (values >0.79 were considered acceptable), construct validity was evaluated through principal component factor analysis by the Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) statistic and Bartlett’s sphericity test, internal reliability was measured through the calculation of Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, and consistency was appraised through the use of test‑retest reliability at two different time points.RESULTS: The questionnaire had a reliability rate of 95%, indicating high internal validity. Concerning test‑retest reliability, the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.96 (P < 0.001), demonstrating relatively good stability. The CVI was 0.81, and the CVR was 0.85. The KMO measure of sampling adequacy was 0.954, indicating the acceptability of the degree of common variance among the all items.CONCLUSIONS: This Persian questionnaire on virtual education aimed at cardiology faculty members in the current pandemic with its low question count and appropriate domains had high reliability and validity. By knowing the level of professors’ satisfaction with the new method of education, it is possible to take steps to better provide specialized medical education to cardiology residents.

Read More BACKGROUND: The objective of the study was to analyze and determine statistically significantimpact of the COVID‑19 on clinical load of plastic and reconstructive surgery practices.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The retrospective analysis and comparison of the number of patientsvisiting to outpatient clinic, number of patients admitted, number of patients operated in the plasticand reconstructive surgery department during the COVID‑19 pandemic months of January 2020–June 2020 with the same months of preceding non‑COVID‑19 year was done. The data obtainedwere tabulated in Microsoft Excel spread sheet and the statistical analysis done using MedCalcstatistical software.RESULTS: The mean ± standard deviation of patients attended in outpatient department (OPD),admitted in inpatient department (IPD), emergency surgeries performed, and elective surgeriesperformed during ‑COVID‑19 versus COVID‑19 pandemic period is (651.167 ± 310.42 vs.212.5 ± 307.591), (83.5 ± 16.263 vs. 34.333 ± 53.74), (5.167 ± 4.243 vs. 3.333 ± 4.95),and (74.333 ± 28.284 vs. 40.833 ± 60.811), respectively. The difference in means is highly significantstatistically in the number of patients attended in OPD, admitted in IPD, and elective surgeriesperformed during pre‑COVID versus COVID period; however, the difference in the means is notstatistically significant in the number of emergency surgeries performed during pre‑COVID versusCOVID period.CONCLUSION: The COVID‑19 pandemic has significantly reduced the number of patients attended inOPD, admitted in IPD, and elective surgeries performed in the department of plastic surgery. However,there is a reduction in number of emergency surgeries but statistically insignificant. The strategy isto use telemedicine portal e‑Sanjeevani services for OPD, encourage admission of patients withreverse transcription polymerase chain reaction negative for COVID‑19, and perform reconstructiveand esthetic plastic surgery operative procedures using COVID‑19 appropriate precautions.

Frontline health‑care workers (HCWs) fighting against this pandemic facedsome psychological as well as social issues which are of major concern. The objective of the study isto evaluate the magnitude of mental health problems, namely depression, anxiety, and stress amongfrontline HCWs as well as their perception on ongoing events and surroundings.MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was a prospective, observational study on n = 85 HCWs overa 4‑month period. Study participants were sampled purposively in accordance with inclusion andexclusion criteria; data were collected by online survey method. A semi‑structured scale was used:Part A of which assessed the demography and perception of HCWs on surrounding along with ongoingsocial events and Part B consisted of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale‑21 that was usedto assess mental health issues. All the associations were tested in percentages and proportions.Statistics was calculated by using SPSS 24th version.RESULTS: Majority of the participants were female doctors and belonged to 21–30 years’ agegroup. Most of them were marginally worried of contacting infection (73%) but were substantiallyapprehensive of transmitting infection to their family (56.5%) and hoped positive outcome ultimatelyin the form of recovery from infection. Majority (96.4%) gathered information from authentic sourcesand were confident of adequacy of their knowledge. Majority (88.3%) were satisfied about theiroccupational safety and responded on scientific solution of pandemic. However, we got a mixedresult about their professional appreciation. Depression symptom score was higher than anxiety andstress symptom score in our participants.CONCLUSIONS: Doctors and nurses both were suffering from mental health issues, and provisionof adequate information and occupational safety may lessen these burdens.

Read More BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, the virus that causes COVID‑19,mainly spreads through respiratory droplets. The dental profession is particularly at risk. Routinedental care was suspended after the announcement of the first lockdown in India. This makes thegroup vulnerable to psychosocial consequences. The present study aims to evaluate the psychosocialissues among dental professionals during COVID‑19 pandemic.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Across‑sectional study was conducted among 627 dental professionalsof India, using online Google Forms from April 23, 2020, through April 30, 2020. Participants wereevaluated using self‑constructed and self‑administered personal and professional hardship and fearchecklist specifically developed for this study. The 9‑item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ‑9)Depression Scale and 7‑item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale and PHQ‑15 were used to assessthe depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms.RESULTS: Fear had a remarkable impact on 80.7% of responders. Among the participants, 40.5%,24.5%, and 30.6% reported symptoms of depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, respectively.Somatic symptoms were significantly associated with gender (P = 0.000). Work setting was significantlyassociated with depression (P = 0.011) and anxiety symptoms (P = 0.001). Concern, worry, and feardue to COVID‑19 were significantly associated with depression (P = 0.000), anxiety (P = 0.033), andsomatic symptoms (P = 0.009). There was a positive correlation between depression and anxietysymptoms (P = 0.01) and between age and somatic symptoms (P = 0.5).CONCLUSIONS: This group reported a high level of depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms.Female dental professionals and private practitioners had more depression, anxiety, and somaticsymptoms. Immediate and special intervention is needed for this group. Further exploration into thenature and its effects of the psychological symptoms may be required.

Read More BACKGROUND: Utilizing the successful experiences of countries and local regions can be useful inthe management and control of coronavirus disease‑2019 (COVID‑19), so the research team aimsto determine and extract the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the health systemin the risk management of COVID‑19 using strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT)analytical approach.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was performed by a qualitative multimethod approach.In addition to reviewing the minutes of meetings and approvals of the Provincial Anti‑CoronaHeadquarters, focused group meetings and in‑depth semi‑structured individual interviews wereconducted. The results were extracted based on the SWOT analytical approach in the form ofstrengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the health system and then based on the SWOTmatrix, the necessary strategies were identified.RESULTS: In the necessary strategies, based on SWOT matrix in SO strategies: SO1, formationof regional health assessment teams; SO2, promotion of preparedness, resilience, and effectiveresponse; SO3, activation of research and training centers; SO4, integrated management,supervision, and coordination; in WO strategies: WO1, analysis and COVID‑19 risk monitoring;WO2, communication and risk information management; WO3, people‑based management; andWO4, activation of local economic institutions and manufacturing centers; in ST: ST1, comprehensivecare system strategies; and ST2, enhancing social trust with a transparency approach; and finallyin WT strategies; WT1, stress management; and WT2, specific financial system design for disastermanagement were identified.CONCLUSION: Now, for the prevention and control of this disease, the need of empathy andparticipation of all human societies is felt more than anything else. These experience and analysisare based on the SWOT approach for the health system to be able to provide solutions and practicalpoints that can be used by stakeholders.

Read More BACKGROUND: Due to the COVID‑19 pandemic, many countries have implemented nationwidelockdowns. While this leads to a decrease in disease transmission, there is a concurrent increase inthe levels of psychological distress. To estimate the levels of psychological distress in school‑ andcollege‑going adolescents currently under lockdown and to determine the factors associated withthis psychological distress.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross‑sectional study conducted in Army Public School andCollege (APSAC) Sibi, Balochistan province of Pakistan between March and May 2020. Studentsof APSAC Sibi were enrolled in this research. Modified Kuppuswamy Socioeconomic Scale, GodinLeisure‑Time Exercise Questionnaire, and Kessler‑10 were used for data acquisition. Chi‑squareand t‑tests and univariate analysis (nonparametric test) were performed using the Statistical Packagefor the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 (IBM, Armonk, US).RESULTS: Out of 225 participants, 57.4% were studying at school. Sixty‑four percent of the participantswere likely to be suffering from psychological distress. There is a significant effect of physical activity,sleep duration, bedtime at night, screen‑time duration, and COVID‑19 positive family member on thelevels of distress. A moderate positive correlation was between psychological distress and bed‑time atnight (rho[223] = 0.328, P < 0.001) and screen time duration (rho[223] = 0.541, P < 0.001). A moderatenegative correlation of physical activity (rho[223] = −0.340, P < 0.001) and a weak negative correlationof sleep duration hours (rho[225] = −0.158, P = 0.018) was found with psychological distress levels.CONCLUSIONS: The COVID‑19 lockdown and pandemic have had a considerable psychologicalimpact on both school‑going and college‑going students, showing increased level of stress. A strongpublic health campaign along with mental and physical and social support programs are the needof the hour.
