Read More INTRODUCTION: Disaster can occur at any time any place. Disaster preparedness plays an importantrole to reduce the loss of a community/country. The aim of this interventional study was to ascertainthe impact of a video‑based educational intervention program on improvement in knowledge andattitude of paramedical students in a hospital.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A pre–post study (interventional study design) was conducted onparamedic students. Our study period was 6 months which was divided into Phases I, II, and III. Foradministrative purpose, we included all paramedical students, and our sample size was 119. Thebaseline assessment of knowledge and attitude of paramedic students was done by a pretestedquestionnaire (Observation 1) with having a baseline scoring. After that, intervention Phase 1 wasimplemented, and later, end line observation (Observation 2) was made. Changes in knowledge andattitude were observed by the score difference (Observation 2–Observation 1). Descriptive statisticswere calculated, and the mean of cumulative score was compared using the Wilcoxon signed‑ranktest. We applied Mann–Whitney U‑test for finding associations between dependent variables withan independent variable using SPSS version 22 (IBM, Chicago, USA) software.RESULTS: Our baseline results showed that most of our participants had averageknowledge (54.6%), followed by poor knowledge (24.4%). Approximately one‑fifth (21.0%) of theparticipants had good knowledge regarding disaster preparedness. A significant improvement wasobserved in cumulative score (P < 0.005). A significant difference was observed in knowledge andattitude with respect to age and courses (P < 0.05). Forty percent of the students responded thatthey would like to get trained by that mock drill, and 26.1% were interested in disaster preparednessworkshops in the future.CONCLUSION: Our present study results indicate that the overall knowledge and attitude level ofthe students was average and required improvement. A similar result was reported in some studiesconducted globally for the same purpose. All of our students perceived that training for disasterpreparedness is necessary for all health facilities, and it is important to have an emergency planand disaster management committee. Regarding training methods, most of our students liked ourinteractive audiovisual method. However, their preferred methods were mock drill and workshops.It can be arranged in the future for them.

Read More INTRODUCTION: The objective of the present study was to systematically review the current researchknowledge on hospital preparedness tools used in biological events and factors affecting hospitalpreparedness in such incidents in using a scoping review methodology.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The review process was conducted in accordance with the PreferredReporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta‑Analyses extension for Scoping Reviewsguideline. Online databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar) were used toidentify papers published that evaluated instruments or tools for hospital preparedness in biologicaldisasters (such as influenza, Ebola, and bioterrorism events). The search, article selection, and dataextraction were carried out by two researchers independently.RESULTS: A total of 3440 articles were screened, with 20 articles identified for final analysis. Themajority of research studies identified were conducted in the United States (45%) and were focusedon CBRN incident (20%), Ebola, infectious disease and bioterrorism events (15%), mass casualtyincidents and influenza pandemic (10%), public health emergency, SARS, and biological events (5%).Factors that were identified in the study to hospitals preparedness in biological events classified inseven areas including planning, surge capacity, communication, training and education, medicalmanagement, surveillance and standard operation process.CONCLUSIONS: Published evidences of hospital preparedness on biological events as well as theoverall quality of the psychometric properties of most studies were limited. The results of the currentscoping review could be used as a basis for designing and developing a standard assessmenttool for hospital preparedness in biological events, and it can also be used as a clear vision for thehealthcare managers and policymakers in their future plans to confront the challenges identified byhealthcare institutes in biologic events.

The presentstudy aimed to assess the most important evaluation techniques applied in evaluating health exercisesfor emergencies and disasters.METHODS: This was meta-evaluation study through a systematic review. In this research, wesearched papers based on specific and relevant keywords in research databases including ISI webof science, PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Ovid, ProQuest, Wiley, Google Scholar, and Persiandatabase such as ISC and SID. The search keywords and strategies are followed; “simulation,”“practice,” “drill,” “exercise,” “instrument,” “tool,” “questionnaire,” “ measurement,” “checklist,” “scale,”“test,” “inventory,” “battery,” “evaluation,” “assessment,” “appraisal,” “emergency,” “disaster,” “cricise,”“hazard,” “catastrophe,: “hospital”, “prehospital,” “health centers,” “treatment centers,” were used incombination with Boolean operators OR and AND.RESULTS: The research findings indicate that there are different techniques and methods for datacollection to evaluate performance exercises of health centers and affiliated organizations in disastersand emergencies including debriefing inventories, self‑report, questionnaire, interview, observation,shooting video, and photographing, electronic equipment which can be individually or collectivelyused depending on exercise objectives or purposes.CONCLUSION: Taking exercise in the health sector is one of the important steps in preparation andimplementation of disaster risk management programs. This study can be thus utilized to improvepreparedness of different sectors of health system according to the latest available evaluationtechniques and methods for better implementation of disaster exercise evaluation stages.
