A model for implementing oral health‑promoting school: Integration with dental students’ educational curriculum: A protocol study

Read More BACKGROUND: Schools are ideal setting for children’s oral health‑promoting programs. It is anintegrated model for oral health‑promoting schools (OHPS) with the capacities of dental school’scurriculum and dental students as workforces. In this protocol, the principle of planning andimplementation of the oral health program is described.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on the PRECEDE‑Policy, Regulatory, and OrganizationalConstructs in Educational and Environmental Development (PROCEED) planning model, a frameworkfor determining the potential predisposing, reinforcing, and enabling factors that could be interveningwas diagnosed. To adapt the phases of the planning model for integration of the “OHPS” principlesand the dental students’ curriculum, the following steps are supposed to be considered: Phases1–5 which are to assess the baseline data will include the assessment of children oral health statusand parents and teachers’ knowledge, attitude, and performance. Phase 6 or implementation phasewill be allocated to oral health education interventions for students, parents, and teachers, professionalscreening, prevention, and referral. Phase 7 or the process assessment phase will be to record thenumber of screened students, the amount of fissure sealant and fluoride provision, and percentageof trained parents and teachers. Phase 8 or the impact assessment phase will assess the students’improvement in knowledge and practice, decayed, missing, and filled teeth scores, teachers andmothers’ oral health attitudes and behaviors, and brushing and flossing behaviors. At the last, costanalysis of the program and long‑term monitoring of the interventions is suggested.CONCLUSION: In case that the effectiveness of this model is proven, it can be implemented by otherdental schools for the primary schools in their regions. Considering the number and distribution ofdental schools in the country, this model is executable as targeted population oral health promotionapproach in 6–12‑year‑old schoolchildren.

Read More INTRODUCTION: Oral health is a very important issue for different groups, especially adolescents.Social cognitive theory seeks to describe and promote people’s health behaviors in a variety of ways.The aim of this study was to determine the role of self‑efficacy, outcome expectation, and outcomeexpectancy in promoting oral health behaviors in adolescent girls in Shahrekord.METHODS: The present study was performed as an intervention in junior high schools inShahrekord (school year: 2018–2019). Using cluster sampling method, a total of eighty adolescentgirls studying in Shahrekord public schools were selected and randomly divided into two groups ofintervention and control. A researcher‑made questionnaire was used to collect data on demographicvariables, outcome expectation, and outcome expectancy constructs. In addition, a checklist wasused to assess the status of oral health among the participants. Education for the experimental groupwas held in four sessions, each lasting 50–60 min. The data required for the study were collected inthree stages: before the intervention, immediately after, and 2 months after the intervention. UsingSPSS statistical software version 18, the collected data were analyzed through paired t‑test andanalysis of variance via repeating the observations.RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographicvariables. Before the intervention, there was no significant difference between the two groups interms of the mean scores of outcome expectation, outcome expectancy, and self‑efficacy; however,after the intervention, there was an increase in the scores of the experimental group (P < 0.001). Twomonths after training, there was also a significant increase in the mean score of oral health behaviorin the experimental group (P < 0.001).CONCLUSION: Training based on perceived self‑efficacy, outcome expectation, and outcomeexpectancy played an important role in creating the desired attitude toward oral health‑promotingbehavior among students.
