Read More BACKGROUND: According to the perception of majority of people, especially the elderly, it is believed that elderly people who are sent to old‑age homes are more prone to have depression compared to those who are living with the community. This study was aimed to assess the significance of the place of residence in relation to the presence of depression among the elderly.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross‑sectional descriptive study was conducted between March and August 2020 to assess the depression among the elderly population residing in the Muar district, of Malaysia. A random table was generated of 250 house numbers in Muar where there is at least one geriatric person was living and a random sampling method was used for data collection. A questionnaire was distributed to a sample size of 250 old folks of Muar: those residing in old‑age homes (n = 125) and those residing in their own houses (n = 125). A standard sociodemographic and geriatric depression scale interview was employed for data collection. All details were keyed into the SPSS version 22 software Standard Gradpack 23, and simple description and inferential statistics such as mean, median mode, percentages, and Chi‑square tests were performed to compare the effects of different residences toward the mental health of the elderly.RESULTS: The total mean age of the elderly in both the places was 73.06 ± 9.116 years. Female respondents of this research accounted for 52.8%. In terms of religion, Islam had the highest number of respondents of 46.8%, followed by Buddhist (33.6%), Christian (10.8%), and Hindu (8.8%). The percentage of elderly having more than three children was 45.2%. The marital status and employment status of the elderly in Muar area are mostly widowed (40.8%) and retired (50%). They are predominately literate (81.6%) and most have a monthly income less than RM 2000 (90.8%). We found that the prevalence rate of depression was 70.4% in the elderly residing in old‑age homes and 24.8% in the elderly living in the community. Females had a higher prevalence of depression than males (60.2% vs. 39.8%) among the elderly in old‑age homes, whereas males had a higher prevalence in the community than females (51.6% vs. 48.4%). Logistic regression analysis revealed the place of residence (P < 0.01 and employment status (P = 0.011) as the predictors of depression.CONCLUSION: Results of this study revealed that the high prevalence rate of depression among the elderly is in old‑age homes compared to elderly living in the community.

Read More Background and Purpose of Study: Statistical indices show a growing increase in the elderlypopulation around the world and our country. On the one hand, senior citizens are more exposed totragic events than other age groups due to natural physiological changes. Falling down, accidentsand scalds are among the most prevalent deadly events in this age group. Environmental securityis vital in maintaining the elderly’s health. Therefore, the present research was conducted seekingto determine the prevalence and causes of falls among the elderly hospitalized in Bandar Abbashospitals. Methods and Materials: The present research is of a descriptive, cross‑sectionaltype. Research population is comprised of all the elderly patients in Bandar Abbas hospitals.The sample included 300 individuals who were selected according to convenience samplingmethod till the sample was saturated. The instrument used was a questionnaire and the data werealso gathered through interviews. The collected data were later analyzed by SPSS version 16.To analyze the data, descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage) were used along withthe Chi‑squared test. The significance level was set at P < 0.05. Results: From among the 300subjects, 47.3% had experienced falls since the age of 60. In 22 of cases, it had led to injury andthey were obliged to visit a doctor. The results of this research revealed that the causes of fallsamong the elderly were respectively: 43.33% of unbalance, 12.3% of poor eyesight, 11.66% ofnon‑existing handles or fences, 12% of slippery ground, 2.66% of insufficient lightning, 8.66% ofunbalance and poor eyesight and 9.33% of other reasons. As the results revealed, a correlationexisted between falls and educational level (P < 0.025). Moreover, a significant correlation wasfound between sex and falls (P < 0.011). A similar significant correlation was also observedbetween the place of residence and falling down (P < 0.045). Conclusion: According to theresearch results, planning to prevent events and traumas among the elderly and securing theirresidential environment is of an essential significance.

Read More Introduction: Health promotion behavior is one of the main criteria for determining health thatis recognized as the basic factor in catching numerous diseases. Observing such behaviors bythe elderly prevents affliction to various diseases and has potential effect in promoting healthand increasing the elderly quality of life. This research was done for the aim of determiningeffective factors on health promotion behaviors and health status in the elderly of the Denaprovince. Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty elderly of over 65 years of agewere selected randomly to do this descriptive‑analytical study (cross‑sectional type). Thequestionnaire regarding health promoting lifestyle profile 2 (HPLP2) was used for measuringthe rate of health promotion behaviors. The data was collected by personal interviews andface to face method for completing the relevant questionnaire and was analyzed by SPSSsoftware version 20 and also proper tests. Results: The average score of the elderly healthpromotion behaviors in the Dena province (143.8) indicated the acceptable level of performinghealth promoting behaviors in this group, such that 85% of the elderly had intermediatehealth promoting behaviors and 15% had proper behaviors. Also, the results showed that theaverage score of the physical activity and nutrition sub‑measuring conditions was lower thanthe average score of other sub measures of prevention had the highest average. Moreover,comparison of the correlation of health promotion behaviors with the sub‑measures showedthat apart from the healthy nutrition sub‑measure, all the other sub‑measures have significantcorrelation with health promotion behaviors. Conclusion: From the findings of this study,the authors recommend health providers to promote elderly health promotion behaviors inall communities by identifying health promotion behaviors in other parts of the country, andalso designing suitable intervention programs based on effective factors on health promotionbehaviors of the elderly people.
