Read More BACKGROUND : Cancer is one of the major health problems across the world that poses a greatthreat to human health and active life in all age groups, causing numerous personal, familial, andsocial damages in physical, mental and spiritual dimensions. The aim of the present study wasto investigate the effect of positive psychotherapy on happiness, character strengths, pleasure,commitment, and semantic measures in the lives of people with cancer.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Within the framework of a quasi‑experimental design, 58 patientssuffering from cancer meeting the inclusion criteria (disease history and married) were selected viapurposeful sampling method. However, only 30 of the patients met the required criteria to participatein all psychotherapy sessions. The participants were then randomly assigned to two interventionand control groups (15 participants per group). The intervention group received eight 120‑minsessions of positive psychotherapy on a weekly basis while the control group was put on the waitinglist. Data collection tools included the Oxford Happiness‑Depression Questionnaire and Values inAction‑Inventory of Strengths. The participants completed the questionnaires before and after theintervention. Data analysis was conducted by analysis of covariance.RESULTS: The results of covariance analysis suggested that the use of positive psychotherapy hasbeen effective on increasing happiness (F = 0.129, P = 0.005), increasing character strength (F = 27.55,P = 0.001), increasing the semantic measures (F = 15.23, P = 0.002), increasing pleasure (F = 8.51,P = 0.005), and commitment (F = 64.19, P = 0.001) among patients with cancer.CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study indicated that positive psychotherapy has beeneffective on happiness, strengths, pleasure, commitment, and semantic measures of the life amongpeople with cancer. Positive psychotherapy can be used to minimize the effects of cancer on patients.

Read More BACKGROUND: Happiness is among the factors that promote mental health in mothers withunplanned pregnancy. The present study aimed to determine the impact of attachment skills trainingon happiness among women with unplanned pregnancy.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This clinical trial was conducted on 84 women with unplannedpregnancy referred to three prenatal clinics in Shiraz in 2018. The participants were randomly dividedinto an intervention group and a control group using permutation block. At first, the participants wererequested to sign written informed consent form, demographic information form, and mental healthquestionnaire. Then, they were asked to complete Oxford Happiness Questionnaire and Cranley’sMaternal-Fetal Attachment Scale. The intervention group received attachment training through six90-min sessions, while the control group underwent the hospital’s routine care. The two groups wererequired to fill out the study questionnaires once more after 4 weeks after the intervention. After all,the data were analyzed using Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, independent t-test, and ANOVA.RESULTS: There was a significant difference between the two groups’ pretest and posttest meanscores of happiness (P = 0.0001). The results showed that in the experimental group, pretraining andposttraining period mean scores were 89.64 (7.2) and 93.13 (6.09), respectively; while in the controlgroup, pretraining and posttraining period mean scores were, respectively, 91.69 (9.96) and 91 (8.82).The difference between the two groups was statistically significant. No significant relationship wasobserved between happiness and the couples’ occupations, number of pregnancies, and numberof miscarriages in the two groups (P > 0.05).CONCLUSION: The mean score of happiness increased after the training, being significantly differentfrom that in the control group. Therefore, happiness is a changeable feature that can be promotedamong pregnant women via interventional methods.
