Effectiveness of a curriculum‑based educational intervention on oral health behavior and dental caries experience among Indian schoolchildren

Read More BACKGROUND: The high incidence of dental diseases among Indian children can be attributed to lowawareness regarding the oral health maintenance. The school health curriculum in India is deficientof an oral health component, and there are no organized oral health programs for schoolchildrenexisting at present. Therefore, the present study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of an oralhealth curriculum in improving the oral health behavior and dental caries experience in schoolchildren.METHODS: A nonrandomized trial with pretest/posttest design was conducted among 600schoolchildren. Two intervention arms were designed with one group receiving health education from adental health professional and other from a school teacher. The oral health curriculum was customizedfor three sections of different age groups (lower primary [LP], upper primary [UP], high school [HS])and implemented for a period of 1 year. Oral health behaviors were recorded using a Knowledge,Attitude and Practice (KAP) questionnaire and were evaluated at baseline, 6 months, and 1 year ofthe educational intervention. Dental caries experience was measured Pre and Post - interventionusing deft and decayed, missing, and filled teeth indices. Descriptive statistics were calculated forcontinuous data, and the change in KAP scores and dental caries experience was analyzed usingthe repeated measures of ANOVA, independent t‑tests, and paired t‑tests.RESULTS: There were significant improvements in KAP regarding oral health among Indianschoolchildren. Significant reductions in decayed primary teeth were observed in LP and UPschoolchildren post-intervention. However, there was no significant difference in primary outcomebetween the two intervention arms.CONCLUSIONS: A curriculum‑based health education intervention customized for different agegroups was found to be effective in improving oral health behavior and dental caries experienceamong Indian schoolchildren.

Moreover,it is categorized among empowerment tools to achieve goals. In the field of health, health educationencourages people to be healthy. This study aimed to evaluate the health literacy of health‑careproviders and its relationship with strategies of using health literacy in the provision of health education.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross‑section correlational study was carried out on a groupof health‑care providers in Isfahan, Iran, in the second trimester of the Persian year 1397 (2018).Participants were selected by multistage sampling, for which two questionnaires of Test of FunctionalHealth Literacy in Adults and inventory of strategies of using health literacy in education were applied.The validity and reliability of the research tools were formerly approved. In addition, data analysis wasperformed in SPSS version 21 using Pearson’s correlation coefficient and linear regression model.RESULTS: In total, 230 participants with a mean age of 34.32 ± 7.71 years were entered intothe study, 92.9% of whom were female and 7.1% were male. The mean health literacy score ofthe participants was 79.60 ± 12.41. In the sections of knowledge, attitude, and performance wererelated to the use of health literacy education strategies, and we obtained the means 5.20 ± 1.94,43.11 ± 4.11, and 28.96 ± 6.73, respectively. Moreover, Pearson’s results were indicative of asignificant relationship between health literacy of health‑care providers and knowledge (r = 0.245;P < 0.05) and performance (r = 0.208. P < 0.05) regarding the use of education strategies. However,no significant association was found between health literacy of health‑care providers and attitudetoward the use of health literacy education strategies (r = 0.081; P = 0.225).DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: While the results showed that 75% of health‑care providers hada favorable level of health literacy, and despite the proper attitude toward the use of health literacyeducation strategies, the knowledge and performance of the participants were estimated at < 60% inthis regard. It is suggested that the potential of health‑care providers in terms of achieving, processing,and perceiving health‑related information and fundamental services be improved to enhance theirknowledge and performance regarding the use of health literacy education strategies.

Read More Background: Diabetes as the most common diseases caused by metabolic disorders is animportant global challenge. This is a disease that requires lifelong self‑care because self‑care andimproved quality of life is cost effective. This study is aimed to determine the impact of self‑careeducation program on reducing HbA1c, type 2 diabetic patients and was conducted in Zahedan.Materials and Methods: This is an experimental study done on 138 diabetic female patients inZahedan city, in 2011 (1390). This sampling method of patients was based on inclusion and exclusioncriteria of the Diabetes Center, at Hazrat Ali Asghar Hospital(AS) in Zahedan. Samples were dividedrandomly in to two groups: 69 cases and 69 controls. Data collected included validity and reliabilityconfirmed questionnaire. Checklist was based on patients ‘performance of reporting and (HbA1c)testing. Before the educational intervention, the checklist of questions for recording the (HbA1c)test for both the groups were completed, and study samples received 5 sessions of education (withthe group discussion and film show) for a month. However, the control group received only routinetraining. Three months after the educational intervention, both groups completed the questionnaireand the check list and data using SPSS software and the appropriate tests were analyzed.Results: Findings showed that the mean domain scores of area of knowledge, attitude and practiceeducational groups, were recorded as (46.6 ± 8.57, 46.5 ± 0.86 and 29.06 ± 10.02), respectively.And after education scores of knowledge, attitude and practice were recorded as (52.80 ± 2.20,12.98 ± 1.02 and 39.69 ± 4.74), respectively, and in study group significant difference (P < 0/001)was seen. Conclusion: Self‑care training in striation leads to improve knowledge, attitude andself‑care performance of the study samples and also improves the average (HbA1c). Because itseems to increase the active participation of learners in their care that they have experienced withthis training method and their motivation enhanced them to learn better self‑care. So this type ofcare education should be given to the attention of nurses and healthcare’s staff.
