Read More BACKGROUND: The motivation to seek health information on the Internet for individuals has beenvaried. The purpose of this paper was to explore the perspectives and experiences about onlinehealth information seeking in information technology (IT) professionals.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative case study research design was employed to examinethe behavior of 15 IT professionals from a state organization in the East Coast of the United Statesof America. Convenience sampling was used to identify the setting, and purposeful sampling wasused to select the participants. A survey questionnaire was used as a recruitment tool, and in‑depthindividual interviews with standardized semi‑structured questions were used to collect data.RESULTS: Findings illustrated that the Internet was the first source of reference for wellness andprevention information to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and to alleviate and prevent work‑relatedmusculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). The themes that emerged from the study were that the ITprofessionals searched the Internet for information to self‑educate about medical conditions, tomaintain fitness, communicate with health‑care professionals, decide their treatment options, and tomake lifestyle modifications such as ergonomic adjustment of their workstation, postural adjustments,and changing negative health behaviors.CONCLUSION: The results of this study provide practical implications for organizations and healthprofessionals in providing health education to prevent WMSDs as participants sought healthinformation online to take actions and collaborate with their health‑care professionals and activelycontributed to their medical health decisions. This underscores a valuable opportunity for health‑careproviders and public health officials to become more proactive by providing their patients with qualityhealth information outside their office through the Internet by referring them to credible websitesources.

Read More BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of Internet addiction has increased due to the delay betweenInternet technology and the culture of using it. According to the high prevalence of Internet addictionamong students and its associated complications, the present study was conducted to determinethe effect of education based on the health belief model on Internet addiction status among studentsin Tehran, Iran.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this interventional study, two dormitories were divided into twogroups of control and intervention in a completely random manner using the random cluster samplingmethod from a total of eight dormitories. Then 134 girls in each group answer two questionnaires ofYoung (about Internet addiction) and health belief model‑based scale. After the need assessmentsof the primary results, intervention was performed in the experimental group in a way that a textbookbased on the health belief model and ten educational text messages were sent to the students’ E‑mail.Two months later, questionnaires were again given to both groups. The results were analyzed withthe help of independent t‑test, Chi‑square test, Fisher’s exact test, Mann–Whitney test, analysis ofcovariance, and logistic regression with repetitive measures with GEE approach.RESULTS: The average scores of knowledge (P < 0.001), perceived susceptibility (P < 0.001),perceived severity (P = 0.006), perceived barriers (P < 0.001), and self‑efficacy (P = 0.002)between the two groups, had a significant difference after the intervention. The average scores ofperceived benefits (P = 0.6), Internet addiction behavior (P = 0.11), and the frequency of Internetaddiction (P = 0.63) after intervention did not have a significant difference in the two groups.CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study show the effectiveness of educational intervention designbased on the structures of health belief model on reducing the frequency of Internet addiction andadopting preventive behaviors.

Read More INTRODUCTION: Use of technology and ICT tools is ubiquitous among college students includingmedical students. However overuse or misuse may lead to many physical and psychological problemsincluding the risk of harming professional standing in the long term. The purpose of this study wasto explore techno stress among freshmen at a medical institute and to suggest measures to reduceproblematic use of technology pertaining to internet.OBJECTIVES: (i) To explore the extent of technology use including internet among medicalfreshmen, (ii) To identify the content of usage (iii) To quantify the extent of techno stress and iv. Tosuggest measures to reduce problematic use of technology.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample comprised all the freshmen at a medical institute (n = 61).A semi structured questionnaire was used to collect socio demographic details of students and theirpatterns of technology usage. Perceived Stress Scale was used to measure stress.RESULTS: The mean age of the sample was 18.34 (±0.58) years comprising 68% males and 32%females. Students spent a mean time of 3.96 h/day on the technology tools (standard deviation = 4.99).Ninety-two percent of the students used technology for educational purposes followed byentertainment (89%), social networking (77.78%), watching films (70.37%), communication (66.67%)and watching pornography (46.3%). 11.47% had symptoms suggestive of problematic internet use.One percent had craving suggestive of addiction. All these had stress out of which 43% had highand 57% had moderate levels of stress.DISCUSSION: Considering the students’ present usage of social media, it can serve as a potentacademic tool. However, awareness is required to be raised with regard to its use as a medicalprofessional.CONCLUSION: Use of technology is crucial in the current academic world and restrictions on usagemay neither be practical nor feasible. However, understanding patterns of usage among students is apreliminary step that can enable educators and administrators to formulate guidelines to channelisetheir usage in more productive ways.
