A comparative study into the effects of topical hot salt and hot sand on patients’ perception of low back pain

Read More BACGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) has been regarded as one of the musculoskeletal problemswhich is affecting more than three‑quarters of individuals in their lifetime. Nowadays, variouspharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies are employed for relieving and treating LBP. Thisstudy was conducted to compare the effects of topical hot salt and hot sand on patients’ perceptionof LBP.MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this, quasi‑experimental study patients with LBP referring to theorthopedic clinic of Shahrekord educational hospital were divided randomly into two interventions andone control group in 2020. All three groups were received naproxen cream and daily physiotherapyin the same manner, the interventional groups in addition either topical hot salt or topical hot sand.Data gathering tool for measuring patients’ perception of LBP was the McGill Pain Short FormQuestionnaire to be completed at the beginning, immediately at the end, and 2 months after theintervention. The data were analyzed using SPSS statistical software (version 21.0).RESULTS: Totally, 90 patients were randomized based on the table of random numbers (mean age51.1 + 11.1), and finally, 87 patients completed the study. Patients’ perception of LBP before theintervention was homogenous in hot salt, hot sand, and the control group The mean score of totalpain experience before the intervention was 14.1 ± 11.3 for hot sand, 13.9 ± 10.7 for hot salt and13.7 ± 10.1 for control group The mean scores of these three groups were not significant before theintervention (P > 0.05). The mean score of total pain experience immediately after the interventionwas 6.7 ± 4.2 for hot sand, 5.2 ± 3.1 for hot salt and 13.9 ± 9.8 for control group. The mean scoresof the hot sand group and the hot salt group were significantly decreased compared with controlgroup (P > 0.05). The mean score of total pain experience two months after the intervention was5.6 ± 3.27 for hot sand, 4.21 ± 2.14 for hot salt and 13.8 ± 10.4 for control group. Mean score of totalpain experience in both intervention groups had significantly reduced two months after the interventioncompared to control group (P ≤ 0.001); so that the effect of hot salt treatment on reducing totalpain experience was larger than hot sand (P ≤ 0.001). The same trend was observed for VAS andPresent pain intensity variables.CONCLUSIONS: The findings have revealed that the topical treatments with hot salt and hot sandcould have a significant effect on the perception of LBP compared to those in the control group;whereas hot salt might be stronger effects than hot sand on reducing LBP.

Read More BACKGROUND: Patient safety culture is an integral part of patient care standards and a prerequisitefor safe care. SBAR is an acronym for Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation; thiscommunication model has gained popularity in health‑care settings, especially among professionssuch as nursing. However, there is little evidence that nursing professional education can enhancepatient safety culture. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a SBAR‑based trainingprogram on patient safety culture in intensive care unit (ICU) nurses.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The quasi‑experimental study was carried out in 2018–2019 at areascovered by Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences, Iran. This study was performed on 60 nursesworking in ICU. The participants were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups of30 each. For the experimental group, five workshop sessions of SBAR‑based program were held.For the control group, the patient delivery process was performed according to the ward routine. Datawere collected using patient safety culture questionnaires before and 1 month after the intervention,and were analyzed using descriptive and analytical tests such as paired t‑test, independent t‑test,and Chi‑square test by SPSS 22.RESULTS: The mean score of safety culture was 31 ± 23.5 and 55.2 ± 28.6 in frequency of reportingevents, 32.8 ± 17.8 and 54.3 ± 19 in overall perception of patient safety, 23 ± 20.1 and 52.9 ± 26 incommunication channel openness, and 35.2 ± 19.8 and 52.4 ± 18.8 in information exchange andconveyance before and after training intervention, respectively, so that they improved from poorlevel to neutral‑moderate level. There was no strength in any dimensions of safety culture; however,the implementation of the SBAR‑based program was significantly associated with patient safetyculture (P < 0.001).CONCLUSIONS: Improving patient safety culture requires attention to patient safety models suchas SBAR approach that provides an appropriate and reliable structure for quality improvement.SBAR‑based program training is effective in promoting patient safety culture; therefore, it isrecommended that managers use this technique to promote patient safety culture.

Read More BACKGROUND: The COVID‑19 epidemic is a global health crisis that, in addition to physical health,has affected the mental health of all individuals, especially health‑care workers, including nursesand family members. In this regard, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of COVID‑19epidemic on mental health of nurses’ family members.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present descriptive‑analytic and cross‑sectional study wasconducted in 2020 year on family members of nurses working in Hajar Hospital for admission andhospitalization of patients with COVID‑19, after obtaining the necessary permits and coordination. Toprevent the spread of COVID‑19 through respiratory or contact droplets, a blog was designed to collectdata using software. Participation in this study was voluntary. Data collection tools included consent,demographic questionnaire, and mental health questionnaire (Patient Health Questionnaire‑9). Datawere analyzed by SPSS version 22.RESULTS: Findings of this study showed that out of 208 family members of nurses participatingin this study, 96 were male and 112 were female and their mean age was 35.78 years, and 55.3%of the participants had university education. Their mean mental health score was 12.91 ± 3.75, sothat 22.6% of people had mild depression, 71.4% of people had moderate depression, and 1.8%of people had severe depression. Independent t‑test showed that there is a statistically significantrelationship between mental health and gender and marital status (P < 0.001). Furthermore, one‑wayanalysis of variance test showed that there is a significant relationship between mental health andage (P < 0.001); this test also showed that there is no relationship between education and mentalhealth (P = 0.75).CONCLUSION: The results indicate that the mental health of nurses’ family members is affectedby the challenges of COVID‑19 epidemic time, so that many of them suffer from some degree ofdepression. Therefore, supporting this population requires urgent action.

Read More Background and Objective: Depression is one of the most common and specific problemsduring pregnancy and after it. Maternal postpartum depression compromises mother’s healthand affects social relationship, and has negative effect on infant development. The aim ofthis study was to investigate the prevalence of postpartum depression and its related factorsin Isfahanian mothers. Materials and Methods: This is a cross - sectional study. The studypopulations were 133 women who at the last 8-4 weeks of labor referred to Isfahan healthcenters. Demographic information and obstetric and Beck Depression Inventory were applied.Three categories emerged according to the degree of scale: Mild, moderate, and severedepression. Statistical analysis was used with the Pearson correlation and linear regressionin SPSS version 18. Results: A total of 73 mothers had mild depression (10-19) and 56 hadmoderate depressions (20-29). Among the factors related to depression such as maternaleducation, financial status, unwanted pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome, and maternaloccupational history, there was a significant correlation with postpartum depression (P > 0.05).Variables in the regression analysis include maternal education, financial status, unwantedpregnancy, history of premenstrual syndrome, maternal occupation, type of delivery, historyof miscarriage, and having a satisfaction with baby gender. And, a total of 27.7% varianceexplains the postpartum depression. Among these factors, the predictive variables of maternaleducation, type of delivery, financial condition, unwanted pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome,and maternal occupational history were significant in the meantime; the prediction of unplannedpregnancy was more than other variables (ß = 0.24). Conclusions: With attention to factorsassociated with postpartum depression, the healthcare planner will help to better manage theproblem. The results of this study will help to better understand the factors influencing mothersin the labor process, and mothers in the laborprocess, experiences minimum mental healthdisorders.

Read More Background and Objective: Adult age is a sensitive period of human life and paying attentionto the issues and needs of this stage is a social necessity. Regarding the specific needs of thisperiod, considering the empowerment, dignity, and self-efficacy in the elders is very important too,which is frequently neglected. This study aims to determine the effect of family-based interventionson the elders’ empowerment with emphasis on self-efficacy, self-esteem, perceive threat, andquality of life of the elders in Isfahan. Materials and Methods: In this semi-experimental study,64 elderly people with the ability to perform routine and daily tasks without dependence onothers and without systemic and restrictive diseases were chosen by available sampling methodand were divided into two intervention and control groups. In intervention group, the model offamily-based empowerment was trained and conducted in ten 45-minute sessions. The level ofperceived threat, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and life quality in both groups were evaluated beforeand after intervention through a questionnaire. Chi Square, paired and independent t-test wereused for statistical analysis. Results: Statistical test of paired t-test indicated that family-basedempowerment model significantly increased the quality of life in intervention group compared withthe control group (P < 0.01). Statistical test of independent t-test showed a significant differencein intervention and control groups after conducting the program in the score of the self-esteem(P < 0.001). Regarding self-efficiency, independent t-test did not show any significant differencebetween the two groups before intervention. Despite the increase of self-efficacy score afterintervention, this difference was not significant (P = 0.076). Conclusion: Regarding the findings ofthis research, we can conclude that it is possible to increase the level of self-efficacy, self-esteem,perceived threat, and finally quality of life of the elders and facilitate the way for healthy aging andbeing healthy in this period using family-based empowerment model regularly and consistently.
