Read More BACKGROUND AND AIM: To answer the society’s health‑care needs related to social determinantsof health (SDH), higher education system must be responsive in training knowledgeable students andfaculty members. Therefore, this study was carried out to determine the responsiveness of highereducation system in relation to the SDH.METHODS: This is a content analysis study carried out using qualitative approach. Semi‑structuredinterviews were used to gain access to the knowledge of experts in the fields of health care, education,and SDH. Sampling was carried out until data saturation was achieved during which 15 experts wereselected using purposeful sampling method with highest possible variety. Data were categorizedusing qualitative content analysis approach.RESULTS: In total, 11 themes and 43 categories of codes were identified in semi‑structuredinterviews with experts. A total of two approaches were identified for the training of responsivestudents including educational–research approach and cultural–social approach; five approacheswere identified for the development of faculty members including cognitive development, executivedevelopment, evaluation, promotion and incentives, and revisions; two approaches were identified forprovision of theoretical and practical education including education in a real and active environmentand structural education; and finally, two approaches were identified for evaluation of students andfaculty members in regard to their responsiveness to society’s health needs and SDH includingcontent and operational approaches.CONCLUSION: In general, the results of the current study indicate the need for the higher educationsystem to use educational, research, and society‑based approaches in real and social environmentsalong with an incentive system and use of evaluation for responsiveness to society’s health needsand SDH. These results can be useful for the health‑care system and the higher education system.

Read More BACKGROUND AND AIM: Some people exposed to disasters will suffer from acute stressdisorder (ASD) due to the negative consequences of these disasters. Evaluating this disorder at alarge scale requires a credible and standardized tool. Therefore, the current study aims to investigatethe psychometric properties of the ASD questionnaire for people exposed to Kerman earthquake.METHODS: This is a descriptive‑tooling study, conducted on 435 men and women older than 18 yearsliving in earthquake‑affected areas of Kerman Province (Kouh‑e‑Banan). The study was carried outusing the Persian translating of the English version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of MentalDisorders, Fifth Edition ASD questionnaire on accessible individuals living in temporary residencetents in two initial and final stages and different stages of validity and reliability evaluation was carriedout. The findings were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.RESULTS: During the evaluation of content validity, no questions were eliminated. To carry outfactor analysis, sampling competence, and suitability of sample size were confirmed throughKaiser–Meyer–Olkin and Bartlett’s tests. In the factor analysis stage, 14 items in three factors weredefined. The factors were included reexperiencing and analysis, arousal (continuous irritability), andavoidance factors which together explained 59.43% of percentage distribution. In the next stageof evaluating divergent validity, the results indicated a significant and inverse correlation betweenASD score and quality of life score (r = −0.43, P = 0.002) of the participants, while there was alsoa positive and significant correlation between ASD score and general health disorder score ofthe participants (r = 0.47, P < 0.0001). The reliability of the questionnaire was investigated usingCronbach’s alpha, and inner class correlation coefficient was calculated to be 0.9.CONCLUSIONS: The tool investigated in this study has suitable validity and reliability and is effectivefor use by psychologists and relief workers for necessary interventions and prevention of ASD indisasters.

Read More INTRODUCTION: Patients undergoing hemodialysis have a low level of health and mindfulnesstechnique in mind‑body medicine is used to help patients with chronic illness. Therefore, this clinicaltrial was conducted to determine the effect of the mindfulness program on the general health ofpatients undergoing treatment with hemodialysis.METHODS: Sixty hemodialysis patients were selected through the convenient method and randomlydivided into experimental and control groups. Both groups completed demographic informationquestionnaire and general health questionnaire. Then, the experimental group received 8 sessions ofmindfulness training and the control group received 8 sessions of education in relation to end‑stage renaldisease and hemodialysis. Educational sessions were performed for both groups in the second 30 minafter hemodialysis for 1 h in six individual sessions and two 1.5 h group sessions. Immediately afterand 1 month after the intervention, the General Health Questionnaire was completed by both groups.RESULTS: Analysis of the findings showed no significant differences between the mean scoreof general health disorder and its subscales before the intervention in to two groups (P > 0.05).Nevertheless, after intervention in the experimental group, the mean of general health disorder scoredecreased from 44.17 ± 12.32 to 21.9 ± 6.4 and 1 month after the intervention, the mean scoreof this score was 23.6 ± 6.2. The mean score of physical symptoms, anxiety and sleep disorder,social functioning deficiency, and depression were also significantly lower in the experimental groupimmediately after intervention and 1 month after the intervention; however, there were no significantdifferences between the mean of this score immediately and 1 month after the intervention. In addition,the mean score of general health disorder changes immediately and 1 month after the interventionin the experimental group was significantly more than the control group. In the control group, therewas no significant difference between the mean score of general health disorder and its subscalesbefore, immediately, and 1 month after the intervention (P > 0.05).CONCLUSIONS: The results of this research showed that mindfulness has been effective in reducingphysical and anxiety symptoms, sleep disorder, social dysfunction, and depression symptoms.Therefore, the use of mindfulness as a complementary treatment can improve the general healthlevel in these patients.
