Read More Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the intake ofdifferent food groups by pregnant mothers and neonatal low birth weight and prematurebirths. Materials and Methods: In this cohort, the target population was 225 pregnant women,randomly selected from different geographical areas of the city of Isfahan, Iran (from April toSeptember, 2012). The main variables in the study were weight and gestational age of theneonates and the type and amount of different food groups used by the mothers. All nutritionalvariables were compared according to different groups of infants (normal, premature, and lowbirth weight). In the multivariate analysis, multiple linear and logistic regression models wereused to identify those different food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) variables independentlyassociated with the newborn’s weight and gestational age, adjusted by maternal consumptionof calcium supplementation, folic acid, and omega‑3, during pregnancy. Results: A totalof 214 (47.7% boys) infants with complete information were included. They had a meangestational age of 38.72 ± 1.2 weeks. The mean birth weight was 3.11 ± 0.384 kg. Thepercentages of premature and low birth weight (LBW) infants were 7 and 5%, respectively. Atmultiple logistic regression controlling for potentially confounding factors that were significantlyassociated with prematurity and LBW at univariate analysis (maternal consumption of calciumsupplementation, folic acid, and omega‑3, during pregnancy), type of nutritional groupscontaining dairy products, proteins, fish, and shrimp group, as well as fruits and vegetables,had a significant positive association with increasing the gestational age (P < 0.05). The groupthat consumed proteins, fish, and shrimp, as well as fruits and vegetables had a significantpositive association with the newborn’s weight (P < 0.05). Conclusion: This study indicatedthe importance of proper nutrition on reducing the rates of LBW and premature births.Comprehensive educational programs atindividual and public levels are warranted inthis regard.

Read More Context:Studies on the World Health Organization Frame‑work Convention on Tobacco Control(FCTC)are scarce in Iran and the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR). Aim: This study was conducted in2007‑2008 in Iran to design a practical evaluation model of the implementation of FCTC with thepotential to be adopted in the EMR. Given that, the findings of this evaluation can be useful in increasingpolitical and public support for enforcing the implementation of legislations, testing their feasibility, andmaintaining sustainability. The viewpoints of tobacco growers as part of stakeholders in this regardwouldhave an influential role. Settings and Design:This study was a qualitative one to investigate the tobaccogrowers viewpoints about thestrengths/weaknesses of FCTC implementation in Iran. Materials andMethods: In this study, we conducted semi‑structured in‑depth individual interviews with 5 tobaccogrowers. All interviews were carried out with their permissionwere recorded and were assured thattheir interviews will be kept confidential. All questions were related to different FCTC articles, thenwritten transcripts were prepared and the basic concepts were extrapolated. Statistical Analysis:Aftertranscribing the recorded interviews, we extracted first level codes and main concepts from them.Results: The findings suggested that although tobacco growers agreed with FCTC implementation,however, subjects like the necessity to support tobacco growers and obtaining insurance from thegovernment, the necessity of the enforcement of national tobacco control law and planning to decreaseaccess to tobacco by policy makers were the most key points that tobacco growers pointed to them.Conclusion: Our results showed that tobacco growers agreed with the implementation of FCTC butthey worried about their job and the expenses of their daily life. Therefore, it seems that policy makershave to design a plan to support tobacco growers for changing tobacco with a safe cultivate.
